Our Firm

For nearly four decades, James D. Hough has operated Hough Financial Services to serve the needs of families, business owners, and professionals. The scope of that service includes retirement and legacy planning, financial planning, insurance analysis, estate analysis, and portfolio and asset-allocation* review. A teacher and college professor by background, Jim uses an educational and analytical approach to meeting his clients’ needs. One of Jim’s greatest professional satisfactions is to hear a client say, “Oh, now I understand how that works.”

  • For Individuals and Families

With several widely accepted software-analysis systems available, Jim provides a complete analysis of the client’s needs. That may include planning for needs such as retirement, college funding, estate distribution, unexpected disability, premature death or tax minimization strategies. Jim focuses much attention on the early steps in the process -- developing extensive factual information and identifying the client’s needs and wants. This critical phase is vital to the ultimate success of the planning process. Written recommendations are provided, based on the findings of the analysis.

  • For Professionals, Business Owners, and their Businesses

In addition to the process outlined above, Jim provides additional services to business owners. Those services are designed to help business owners in various ways: To protect their business investment, to recruit, reward and retain capable employees and to establish executive benefit programs for owner and key employees.

  • For Family Business

Having acquired extensive, specialized education and certification in the planning needs of family business, Jim offers service and creative solutions for the unique problems facing family-run businesses.

  • Conclusion, Commitment and Follow Up

Jim goes beyond providing a plan, taking a fee, and stopping with presentation of a plan. He takes pride in completion of the entire process. Recognizing that a plan, no matter how expensive, is worthless until implemented, Jim sees the process to completion, including implementation. This usually involves a minimum of two meetings, and sometimes several meetings. At Hough Financial Services, they understand that good planning is a “team sport.” Jim works with the client’s other team members -- attorney, accountant, trust officer and family members -- guiding each step in the process. Jim provides a regular review process, which is essential to good planning. Jim is committed to professional service, with attention to all steps in the process, and strongly encourages his clients to go through a regular, periodic review.
